Domestic CCTV Cameras deemed Exempt From Planning

An Bord Pleanala has ruled that 7 no. CCTV cameras situated on the front, side and rear of a dwelling in Walshestown Abbey, Newbridge are exempt from planning permission.  When the owner requested Kildare County Council to make a decision as to exempt status of the cameras the Council instead pushed the question onto the Board.  The Board effectively ruled that issues relating to privacy were irrelevant and the key concern was whether the cameras materially affected the appearance of the dwelling itself or rendered it inconsistent with neighbouring dwellings.   As the cameras located under the eaves were so small it was considered that they were acceptable.
