Anaerobic Digestion Facility Proposed for Athy

An Anaerobic Digestion facility is being proposed at Woodstock Industrial Estate in the town of Athy, Co. Kildare.  

The development comprises the construction of 2 no. anaerobic digestion tanks, 1no. storage tank, a new internal service road to the north of the facility and associated works. The facility will receive up to a maximum of 17,000 tonnes of foodstuffs that are between “best before” and “use by” dates and will produce an output of up to 4,000 tonnes of organic fertiliser.









Athy Southern Distributor Road Funding to be Announced

It is understood that funding for the Athy Southern Distributor Road is to be announced soon.  This road was first proposed back in the late 1970s and has been included on all plans for the town since.  However funding has never been forthcoming.  If this announcement comes to pass, as expected, it will be a significant for boost for the future development of the town.

An Bord Pleanala Grant Supermarket Development in Athy

An Bord Pleanala have granted permission for a supermarket development as part of a new neighbourhood centre on the old Esta factory grounds on the Geraldine Road.  Following on from the decision to grant permission for a supermarket development at the old Batchelor’s site this augurs well for the town getting a much needed additional supermarket facility.

Supermarket Refusal in Athy Appealed to An Bord Pleanala

A recent decision by Athy Town Council to refuse permission for a large supermarket at Woodstock South in Athy has been appealed by the applicant to An Bord Pleanala.  The Board previously refused permission for a supermarket along with ancillary retail on this site.

An Bord Pleanala grant permission to Tegral for new manufacturing facility on unzoned lands

An Bord Pleanala has granted permission to Tegral for a large-scale manufacturing facility on 15.2 hectares of unzoned lands outside Athy Co. Kildare.  Tegral sought permission for the new facility in order to relocate from their existing town centre site in Athy.  Kildare County Council granted permission following a material contravention of the Development Plan given the unzoned nature of the lands. The Councils decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanala by local residents who objected to the proposed development. 

The Board’s inspector recommended a refusal based on the view that there is inadequate assimilative capacity in the River Barrow to accommodate the discharges from the proposed development and that the proposed development would therefore cause pollution of the river.  The Inspector also recommended refusal on the basis that the risks associated with the proximity of the proposed development site to a water abstraction / treatment site are a potentially serious impact.  The Board however overturned the recommendation of the inspector to refuse permission.  The Board felt that having regard to: (more…)

Mixed-use development refused permission in Athy, Co. Kildare

Athy Town Council have refused planning permission for demolition of an existing three storey mixed use building
(retail/dwelling) and the proposed construction of a three storey (over basement) mixed use building at Green Lane/William Street, Athy Co. Kildare.  The proposed development included 4 retail units, a cafe, 16 apartments and 2 office units.

Apart from an application to extend the Supervalue in Athy, January proved to be a quiet month in terms of large-scale applications lodged with the Council and decisions emanating from the Council.  The run up to the Christmas holiday period was quite busy however with a number of interesting applications lodged in Kildare and the two town councils. 


Superquinn lodged an application for a large-scale development encompassing a new supermarket and 8 screen cinema off the Limerick Road (Newbridge Rd).

An application was lodged with Athy town Council for a large retail unit with ancillary retail units and cafe at Cois na Habhainn & former Batchelor’s factory, Rathstewart, Athy.

A third party appeal has been lodged by Peter Norton and Margaret Kane in relation to retention works and new works at no.12 Leinster Street, Athy, Co. Kildare.  No.12 Leinster Street is a protected structure. Kildare County Council had granted permission for the devlopment.
