Agri-business in Rathcoffey, Co. Kildare refused permission by An Bord Pleanala

March 26, 2010

An Bord Pleanála has overturned the decision of Kildare County Council to grant permission for fertilizer plant (4,900 square metres approximately) including raw material storage, blending and packaging department, two-storey administration office, feed and grain facility together with new vehicle entrance onto the R407 and upgrading of road layout to include ghost island Boherhole, Rathcoffey, Donadea, Naas, County Kildare.  The Council’s decision had been appealed to the Board by a third party.  The Board refused permission for one reason as follows:

Having regard to the location of the site within an unserviced rural area and to the results of soil suitability tests carried out on site, it is considered that the site is unsuitable for the proposed development due to the very low subsoil permeability and the high water table and having regard to the nature and scale of the proposed development to be relocated from within the development area of Rathcoffey to this unserviced site, notwithstanding its connections with the rural area. The proposed development would, therefore, be prejudicial to public health and would be contrary to the proper planning and sustainable development of the area.
